EARLY LITERACY/PARENTING RESOURCES

TELLING STORIES

Understanding that daily activities often fall in a certain order helps children adapt to the structure of school.

To make children aware of routines, ask them to tell you a story about something they did that day. Story starters:

– getting ready for bed
– walking to school
– going on a shopping trip
– visiting the library

MAGNETIC ALPHABET

Help your child spell words using an inexpensive magnetic alphabet. Focus on one letter each day and spell words that begin or end with that letter.

Introduce a "new word of the day" and talk about its meaning.

Spell out simple messages for your child to find.
